| News from Zone 10 - Dorothy Cheyne lauded as sports hero From the Kitimat Sentinel on Wednesday, December 9, 2009
Dorothy Cheyne was honoured as a community sport hero at a recent awards gala in Terrace. Cheyne, 81, took home a trophy and a score of other paraphanelia from the gala for her dedication to badminton and tennis at the Riverlodge. "It was wonderful to be honoured," Cheyne told the Sentinel. In the past, she served as chair and director of the Zone 10 BC Seniors Games Society and still volunteers for the games each year. She was also an eager volunteeer when the Northern Games came to Kitimat. Since the late '60s, Cheyne's passion has been teaching tennis and badminton to youngsters at the Riverlodge. Now, she admits, she's busy cheering on floor curling and card games. The mother of two daughers - Cheryl and Barbara - and great-grandmother has also remained active with the Kitimat General Hospital Auxiliary for the past 53 years. "Thank you for all you have done for the BC Games Society and overall sport in British Columbia," said Dave Showers, assistant manager of sport programs and member services for Sport BC. Founded in 2001, the Community Sport Hero awards celebrate and honour sport volunteers across the province of British Columbia. These volunteers are the lifeline to continued development and delivery of sport programs in the province.
